Course description and syllabus

• Text: Calculus by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, et al. This book was developed by the Calculus Consortium based at Harvard to emphasize a thorough understanding of the material in order to prepare students better to use calculus. Please read the preface and the note to students. You should plan to read the textbook more closely than in more typical calculus courses and before the classroom discussion of a topic as indicated on the schedule of reading assignments.
• Calculator: Use of a graphing calculator will be an integral part of the course. Instructors will be using the TI-82. Any graphing calculator you now own will be adequate. The TI-81 is sufficient for the course. You should shop around for a good price.
• Assignments: You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your colleagues and to work together. Working in groups makes explaining approaches and solutions a part of the process and helps you learn. Your goal is to find solutions and to communicate your work in a convincing manner.
• Tests and Grades: There will be weekly quizzes given during the lecture on Friday. All quizzes together will be equivalent to a test (100 points). NO MAKE-UP QUIZZES. There will be 2 exams, spread out through the semester, each will weigh, 100 points, exactly the same (as well as all quizzes together) and a final exam will weight 200 points, a maximum of 100 points will be for your work in the discussion section including the homework.
  1. 2 midterms=200 points (100 points each)
  2. 5 Quizzes=100 points (20 points each)
  3. Discussion Section=100 points (including the homework)
  4. Final Exam =200 points.
• Our course is designed to help you do what is needed to learn mathematics: read, question, experiment, think, talk, and write.
• You must bring your University Picture ID to all exams. Make-up exams will only be given to students with documented excuses that are acceptable and to those who call no later than the same day of the exam at 996-3095 and leave a message (24 hours answering machine). I reserve the right to give make-up exams that are of greater difficulty than the original exam. Grades are based on the following averages:
  • A 90% - 100%
  • B 80% - 89%
  • C 70% - 79%
  • D 60% - 69%
  A grade of INC (Incomplete) will not be given, exempt in extraordinary circumstances Incompletes are given only when a student has a legitimate reason for missing the Final Exam.

  Homework are to be collected on Thursday at the beginning of the discussion
  section and should be returned on the next discussion section. The homework
  due on July 4 will be collected on July 5.
