We not only turned out Illinois, but I helped turn out Wisconsin. After calling Kerry supporters and asking them to volunteer in 5 swing states on Saturday, I drove to Milwaukee on Monday and went door-to-door, talking to people and handing out fliers. I was in the biggest battleground city of the biggest (at the time) battleground state during the biggest battleground day: Both Bush and Kerry had rallies IN Milwaukee ON Monday! It was a great experience, and I was really energized.
It was a miserable, cold rain the entire day. I went with a group of 4 in the late afternoon. We split up and covered an entire ward, knocking on doors, talking to people, and giving them fliers. We got back to Kerry HQ around 8:00pm, and I wanted to do another one, so I went back to the volunteer area and got ready for another trip. The guy got all the stuff ready, and I asked him who else is going, and he said, "It's just you." Nobody else wanted to go! So I strapped the state of Wisconsin on my back and carried it blue for Kerry. I spent two more hours in a River Forest-esque neighborhood of Milwaukee just putting fliers on doors (not knocking because of the late hour), literally running between houses to save time (which does make a difference with those big yards). Got back to HQ, turned in my folder, grabbed a bunch of pizza and candy, changed clothes, then started the drive back, making several phone calls about my experiences.
...Well, I did all I could.
