A Weekend of Hanging Out

April 27-29, 2001

First Person Us

We get to the "Hacienda"-they haven't started cooking yet, some still out shopping. Everyone comes back (Anna with her "jugs"), we have Becca, Anne, Eric, Chrissy, Jan, Nikki, Anna, Amber, Heather. Becca worked hard to prepare the German dish, spaetzle. Eric grilled brats and hot dogs. Watched end of video 4-part 2 of Mexico trip (the part we hadn't seen). Talked; then Anne, Eric, and Jan left. Put in tape 3 for a few minutes, then Nikki, Chrissy, Christine went to Bridget Jones Diary at 11:30pm:

<< The movie was really funny, and we girls were inspired to go driving around town after the movie. Chrissy spots a sexy dude on a cycle and we all agree that we should follow, but we lost him-to everyone's dismay. We pump the music up anyway. Then we get back to the Hac and are annoyed to find no Phil. We want to have fun, but don't want to leave Phil out. We hunt for Phil. >>

Meanwhile, Phil hangs out with Anna, Amber, and Becca: << Still at "The Hac" (the hoss), I call Lisa to say we won't be at her place in Gibson City for the party at 2:00 the next day; we'll be later instead. We go to A&A's dorm (trouble parking) and get the "tour." Becca seems bored; it's the first time I've been with just Anna and Becca at the same time. We joke around, take goofy pictures, and talk for a while-Anna describes Jim. Amber lets us in on Anna's ordering of pictures by shelf ("when you got mad at Nikki, you put her up top"), we are second to Jim. Long time to leave, Becca says it's my fault, but then she forgot her keys, so we had to go back up to get them. I drove with Becca, and we talked about people and friends. We needed gas, but only expensive Amoco was open, so I just got $5 worth. Back to the Hac, note from N,C,C-we missed them, they want to go to the center. But they come back shortly and have changed their minds. >>

We talk in living room, Nikki heads to bed. Becca sleeping "on" Chrissy. Chrissy moves to get up, Becca (asleep): "Oh, no, guys!" We all do email, Becca makes some more noises, Chrissy leads her to a bed (Anne's probably), Becca totally out of it. We talk and talk and talk with Chrissy. Another masterpiece story from Chrissy-about her father, mother, siblings, Julian. Chrissy heads to bed about 5am, Phil: "see you at 3!" We talk a while in bed, again, it's getting light and we don't sleep until 5:45-ish. We sleep in the fold-out with our futon on top in the living room. Lots of phone rings-really loud, reminiscent of train last weekend. Christine gets up at 12:30, suggests that Phil move out of living room.

Phil goes to sleep on Nikki's bed: << Immediately after I moved, I hear Chrissy's family come in-sounds like a whole bunch of people, including a friekin' baby! Christine was right-glad I moved! Then I sleep til 2:45 (notice my prediction above), I hear Chrissy vacuuming. I say, "Can you keep it down, some people are trying to sleep around here!" Chrissy startled, had forgotten anyone was there. Everyone else gone, Phil and Chrissy talk (at a reasonable time!) for an hour, pretty deep stuff again-family, apartment, school, update on Mark-he asked for prayer in church for her sister. Chrissy: "That's the man I fell in love with…I don't know where that other guy came from." Christine and Nikki walk in. >>

Christine went out to lunch with Nikki: << We went to Taco Bell and talked for an hour or more about deep things like racism, our culture, and how everyone has the annoyance of ruining their white shirts with yellow stains under their armpits from deodorant. We talk about our families, our Moms, etc… We realize Nikki has to study, so we head back to the Hac. >>

We adhere to the definition of "hanging out." The next unabridged edition of Webster will have a picture of us at the Hac under that phrase. Just sitting around, chatting, Phil's hair not combed, nobody doing anything, Phil didn't eat lunch, just eats the KKD left. Phil planning to run, finally gets ready to as Nikki and Chrissy get ready for Rob and Nikki's "walk" at U-High. Phil races (and beats!) Nikki and Chrissy to school street. Christine studies at the Hac, Phil runs on the trail-beautiful day. While Phil is running, Jeanna and Rob come by to show off their duds. Phil gets back from running, sees the sharp-looking couple about to leave. Phil to Jeanna: "Would you like a hug?" Inside, more hanging out (Phil: "the last time I went to bed when it was dark was Wednesday night.") Becca calls, she's not going to Lisa's. Phil showers, we pack up, we all (us and Nikki and Chrissy) get ready, off to Lisa's.

Deceptively long trip, we arrive (late-we're back in form) and Kelly is already there with Lisa and Steve. We eat lasagna and spaghetti cooked by Lisa (and live to tell about it! :) Again, Saturday Night Seven. Nikki feeling bad, sleeps in Lisa's bed. The six of us play scum, Lisa king a lot, Phil scum a lot. Then we play ERF, Phil wins. Christine playing slow-sort of out of it, stopped early on to do homework. Nikki and Chrissy leave, Kelly about to leave, then she has a long conversation at the car with Christine.

Phil looks for a time to talk to Lisa, waits patiently, finally finagles it. This conversation elongates the evening, but it was important to do. Kelly leaves, says goodbye at awkward moment. Lisa listens to Phil, takes it a little hard, but able to pleasantly say goodbye (Christine gives Lisa lots of hugs). We leave Gibson City at 1am. Phil drives, similar route taking 57 home, no ticket this time. We talk and reflect a lot in the car about people, the evening. Discussion of how Christine was playing games slow, not catching on to things led to a classic quote. Christine: "I haven't been on top of anything all night…not even you."
