After Christine was throwing up all night, I get up at 10:30 a bit overwhelmed by the tasks ahead, beginning with planning the seminar talk that I had not really done much preparation for at all, then a crazy night of Hoops and VBS and finally a track workout. Plus right now I needed to call and cancel her doctor's appointment and cab ride. So in the bathroom before my shower, I think to myself, "I'm going to smile really big when I cross the finish line on my last workout interval."
I madly scratch down a talk, then without lunch drive madly to UIC, leaving at almost 1:45 for my 2:00 talk. I do make it there and get through the talk (though it could have been better), then leave seminar early to get going, but chat with Luissette and Maria in my office for a bit, then copy O'Nan out of the Atlas and return it to the library, as it has been recalled by someone else. (Due on my birthday-"Happy Birthday! Return the Atlas.") I already ordered my own copy last week. I start driving back a few minutes before 4:00, so of course it's excruciating traffic, and I get home at 4:35, and I'm supposed to be at church at 4:45.
I grab my flats and running shorts, make 2 Bocas, and eat one while driving wildly to Hoops. This evening is the most crazy one of the week, as we have to play two 5-on-5 halfcourt games beforehand, then I try to herd everyone to the chapel (just like every night, but more kids now because the word has gotten around). During one of the games, I come back to the car and eat half of the other Boca. The program is so hideously not designed for their age group that it is excruciating and even embarrassing being there. Then I've got to get through 2 more games after the program. In order to get through the evening, I decide that I won't be doing the track workout tonight; I'll just run easy. I find out that it's raining during the post-program games, and so I think that it's a good thing I'm not doing the workout anyway.
Finally I wrap up the basketball, grab my stuff and head to the car. I get outside and it has stopped raining, it's cool and clear and now I'm done with the annoying headaches of herding kids around. I think "right now would be a great time to do a workout." So I grab my water bottle, head back into church to use the bathroom and decide what I'm going to do. I decide to go for it. At this point, a fast workout on the track would be the easiest thing I've done all day. So I drive to CURF, run a warmup around the neighborhood, then get on the track. I run a 2:30 800m interval, then after a 400m recovery, do the 600-400-600 (200m recovery) in 4:48. As I cross the finish line at the end of the workout, I do smile very broadly and put my arms up in satisfied relief.
