Murphy's Moonlight Milers & Co. River to River Relay Team History

This is our first year with two teams. The "fast" team is established as Murphy's Moonlight Milers from here on out. MMM gets a 6:15am start and the use of two vehicles every year from now on. The 6:15 start is often very nice because you get to finish before the mid-afternoon heat. This year, however, that is irrelevant — it is cold, wet, and windy all day.

Captain Kevin takes home the team award plate this year, but it's the only one he's planning to take himself. He decides the plate will go to a new person each time based on the number of years they've run with Murph & Co.

Origin of the name "Midnight Ramblers"
Clearly Kevin is a big Rolling Stones fan, as this name is the pluralized version of the Stones' 1969 hit.

The Ramblers get a later start than the Moonlight Milers. At least this way Mike gets to sleep some.

Memorable 1999 Moments
Mike's flight from Atlanta to St. Louis is late, so he misses his flight to Marion. He rents a car and drives with some other guy who also missed the flight, arriving at 3am to get up and run at 5:30am.
As Kevin is ready to take his final leg, the lead car has gone on, but the Happy Van—driven by Tim Hola & Nikki—is nowhere to be found. Bill finishes his last leg and hands off to Kevin, but there is nobody around from the team. He stands alone without sweats in the cold for a few minutes until they show up. Perhaps the van got a little too happy!
At some point during the relay, Kevin loses the keys to the car. After a frantic panic, they are discovered.
As Tim brings the baton home, the team lines up to run in with him, though without a great deal of forethought—they gather two blocks from the finish line. Tim blows by everyone and finishes alone.
After the race, Bill pours beer all over his french fries thinking it's a ketchup bottle.
On the way back to Marion, Mary drives all the way to Kentucky before realizing she's going the wrong way.
John Loevy drives home like a maniac, scaring many people in the vehicle.
