Math 531 - Geometric group theory: Introduction to limit groups

The examination for this course will be an oral examination, which will likely consist of a short presentation by the student.

Course Description:  Introduction to limit groups. Bass-Serre theory, JSJ decompositions, Rips theory of groups acting on R-trees. The structure of limit groups over free and hyperbolic groups and applications to logic, topology, geometry and group theory. Other than the prerequisites (fundamental group and covering space theory), the course will be self-contained. No prior knowledge of the above topics will be assumed.

Reading:  A reading list will be handed out the first day of classes.
