Required text: John Howie, Real Analysis, Springer.
Course hours: Monday - Wednesday - Friday, 12:00-12:50 PM.
Office hours:
Monday 2pm, Wednesday 2pm, Friday 10am
Grading Scheme:
Midterms (2) - 40%, Homework - 20%, Final - 40%.
Reading:
There will be a syllabus updated during the semester (see Weekly Schedule below). It is wise to read the appropriate sections
before the lectures.
Homework:
Homework will be due weekly (at the beginning of class on the due date).
No late homework will be accepted, any homework
submitted after the deadline will be given zero credit.
The lowest score will be dropped when calculating your grade.
Midterms: There will be two midterms each taking place during
regular class hours. The dates for these will be announced shortly.
Midterm 1: In class on Friday, February 13, 2009 (noon).
The midterm will cover Chapters 1 and 2 of Howie. (You will not be examined
on Dedekind cuts). There will be a review session on Wednesday, February 11, during the normal
lecture time, so come prepared with questions.
Due to popular demand, here is a more specific set of exercises which may
be useful for Midterm 1: Exercises from Howie on pages 26, 36 and 58. And of course, Homeworks 1, 3 and 4. HW2 was Dedekind cuts which is not examinable. Obviously, reviewing the lecture notes will be valuable also.
Here are worked solutions for midterm 1.
Midterm 2: In class on Wednesday, April 8, 2009 (noon).
The second midterm will cover up to the end of Chapter 4 in Howie (though not Taylor's Theorem).
There will be an in-class practice midterm on Friday April 3, and a review on Monday April 6.
There are also practice problems listed below.
Here is the practice midterm, and here are worked solutions.
Here are worked solutions to Midterm 2.
The midterms and final exam will consist of exercises resembling the homework exercises. So doing exercises equals good exam preparation.
The only valid excuses for missing a midterm are medical, and a letter from a doctor is required.
There are no makeup exams, so if you miss a midterm (with a valid reason as above) the score from
the other midterm will count for the midterm score.
Final exam: The Final Exam will be on Tuesday, May 5 from 8am-10am in A7.
The final will cover all of Chapters 1-4 from Howie, and also Sections 5.1-5.4, Chapter 6 and Section 7.1.
Here is a practice final.
And here are some worked solutions.
