Copying Maple WorkSheets or Plots

Maple Question: How to copy Maple Worksheets? Not easily!

The problem is that Maple Worksheet input is ASCII text, but Worksheet and MaplePlot output are EPS (Encapsulated PostScript, *.eps) files. postscript file.

{Remark: This is essentially a quick note sent to MCS471 class, that will be re-edited at a later date. Description is for NeXT computer systems, such as in Mathlab 200SEO, mileage on other systems will vary tremendously. {%>)}}

  1. Print and Preview Solution: Easy Way for both Maple Worksheets and Plots: Click on the print menu item for the Maple.app WorkSheet or the MaplePlot.app plot, then click on Preview at the bottom of the Print window, then click on the Previewed output window, then save the output into a *.ps file in your directory.

  2. Copy & Paste Solution: Easier way for Worksheet Inputs only: In Maple.app, press the left mouse button as you drag it over the Maple Worksheet input or command, graying out your selection (a quick triple clicking of the left mouse key will gray out a whole line and dragging it down will gray out more lines of plain text), then press Alt-c keys simultaneously to copy (or click on the Edit/Copy menu item), then go to the medium like an Edit.app window that you wanted to put your copy into, then click with the mouse at the target place in the Edit window, then press Alt-v keys simultaneously (same as clicking the Edit/Paste menu item) to paste your copy save in the copy buffer. If it works satisfactorily, save the Edit window by pressing Alt-s simultaneously (same as clicking the File/Save menu item). Note that you can copy and paste Maple Worksheet Input within the Worksheet window itself or from Worksheet window to Worksheet window.

  3. Plain Text Solution: Easier way for Worksheets only: In Maple.app, click on the Worksheet --> Export submenu and select the Plain Text option at the bottom pull-down button (not LaTeX) and save it into a file, say maple-2.txt.

    The options are *.ms or *.maple for the Save As... or Save To.. or Save All... submenus, which may work on some other machines, or maybe not.

    The latex option requires three sty files...so not useful.

  4. Alt-drag-EPS & RTF Solution: MaplePlot pictures can be copied if you have a medium that can save EPS files. On a Next computer, the simplest way is to open an Edit.app window (icon has a pencil on text) press Alt-R together to change it into a Rich Text File (RTF). Now go back to you plot, just press the Alt key while dragging the mouse from inside to outside the plot, an EPS Icon should appear, click on the Edit window and the EPS file should drop into the RTF file, changing the RTF file to an RTFD (RTF directory) file. You can also copy and paste Maple.app input from a Maple Worksheet into an RTF edit window and you can similarly drag Maple output using the Alt-drag/mouse EPS file to the RTFD file. You can continue to edit the RTF like a regular edit window, like adding comments and making a more professional report.

    {Remark: Strangely enough, the help for this technique is in the MaplePlot.app Info/Help menu, but not in the woefully inadequate Maple.app Info/Help menu.}
