Using Maple in MathLab Line Edit Mode,

Locally or Remotely

To Use Maple in MathLab Line Edit Mode, Either:

1. Log directly into a MathLab NeXT computer in 200SEO and double click on the Terminal icon (small picture of a computer display with "MACH" repeated on it),

   OR

2. Remote login using the another networked computer on the Internet, with the command:
   telnet ty.math.uic.edu

   Login:  [Enter_Your_MathLab_Login_Name]

   Password:  [Enter_Your_MathLab_Password]

   {Remark: Enter "logout" when you want to exit the Mathlab computer; any other MathLab computer name of a computer you use in the lab can be used since "ty" for Ty Cobb is used only as an example; you can also Telenet into the Computer Center AIX computers

   telnet icarus.cc.uic.edu
   OR for faculty
   telnet tigger.cc.uic.edu
   if you have accounts on one of them.}

To enter Maple, type at the prompt:

> maple

Some sample Maple exercises:

1. To solve an equation, type:
   > fsolve(x^3 - 0.71*x^2 - 2.09*x + 0.71 = 0 );
   Results in three roots:

   -1.306200277, .3205650277, 1.695635249

2. To plot a function, type:
   > plot( cos(x) - (1/3)*cos(3*x), x = -Pi..Pi );
   Gives the ASCII (text) plot unlike the NEXTSTEP version of Maple:
