\item{Text:} Calculus {\it third edition}  by Hughes-Hallett, Gleason, {\it et al.} This book was developed by the Calculus Consortium based at Harvard to emphasize a thorough understanding of the material and to prepare students better to use calculus. You will need to read the textbook before the classroom discussion of a topic and do a few problems on the new material. This will help you learn more during the class.

\item{Web:}   http://www.math.uic.edu/math180/ is the course web page and   has the homework assignments, links to sample tests, and supplemental material for the class.

\item{Calculator:} You should have a calculator for class. Recommended are the TI82, TI83, TI86, or something equivalent. The TI95 is also OK, and its integration programs  might prove useful for the material.  The numerical integration program needed for integration  are given on the course web page.

\item{Homework:} You are encouraged to discuss homework problems with your fellow students and to work together. Working in groups makes the explanations of approaches and solutions a part of the process and helps you learn. Your goal is to find solutions and to communicate your work in a convincing manner.   (However, you must be honest to do the problems independently too - the goal is for {\bf you} to learn the material, not just help your friends to learn it:-)

\itemitem{} Two Hour Exams (100 points each) {\bf  tentatively on} February 20 and April 2
\itemitem{} The Final Exam (200 points) (comprehensive - covers all of the semester)

\item{}The total points for the semester will be the primary basis for assigning grades, based on the relative ranking in our section. An excellent performamnce on the Final Exam always helps your final course grade.
