An Ada Workbench for Solving Polynomial Systems
by Homotopy Continuation Methods

Jan Verschelde and Ronald Cools

Abstract:

This paper presents a software package for solving systems of polynomial equations using homotopy continuation methods. The introduction gives a brief historical sketch of these methods and states the motivation for the presented software package. Then it will be explained how to apply homotopy continuation methods for solving polynomial systems. By considering the structure and functionality, it becomes clear that the presented software forms a workbench, by offering the user different kind of techniques and tools for handling systems of polynomial equations. Because the amount of computational time can be considerably high, an attempt to distributed continuation will be described. Some applications illustrate the usefulness of the developed software environment.
