We worked ourselves through the first problem of section 11.3, solving an equation of diffusion. The technique of separation of variables illustrates nicely the relation between PDEs and ODEs: one PDE can give rise to infinitely many ODEs, and while the solution of an ODE is relatively simple, the solution to a PDE is made of series of solutions to ODEs.
