Title: Introduction to Geometric Group Theory
Abstract: Geometric group theory is the study of infinite discrete groups as
geometric, rather than algebraic, objects. In this talk I will discuss
some of the basic ideas and examples of the subject. In particular,
the concept of growth will be explored in some detail, including
(without proof) Gromov's famous result characterizing nilpotent groups
in terms of growth.
