Workshop Program:
The mathematical preparation of K-12 teachers is at once complex and critical. Mathematics and mathematical science departments that undertake the mathematics education of future elementary, middle school, and high school teachers serve an essential public duty and the greater interests of the mathematics community itself. Their efforts are commendable, but the task is fraught with challenges.
The workshop is designed to consider the mathematical content knowledge and mathematical skills future teachers should learn, appropriate ways to teach mathematics to future teachers, and the relationships between undergraduate mathematics and school mathematics. Discussions of the national context regarding school mathematics and the teaching of school mathematics set a context for investigating these issues. By learning about programs that mathematics departments are running, departments may evaluate how to incorporate features and approaches to strengthen their own programs.
The workshop program features:
a variety of department case studies in developing programs for future teachers
collaborations between mathematicians and mathematics educators
fundamental issues underlying quality undergraduate math programs, such as TA and
faculty development, and recruitment and retention of math students
