Title: Outcomes Assessment of Teaching Methods in Remedial Mathematics
Speaker: Judith Lee Baxter, University of Illinois at Chicago
The lower remedial mathematics course at UIC was taught in 1995-96 using
four different pedagogies; we examined students' grades in
subsequent mathematics courses. Two traditional lecture formats
were more successful than two more time-intensive experimental methods.
Some other observed features were independent of method; for example,
no version of the lower course led to substantial success through the
calculus level.
