Title: Improving the Quality of Mathematics Education in California
Speaker: Nicholas A. Branca, San Diego State University

The California Mathematics Project (CMP) is a statewide program committed to improving the quality of mathematics education in California for all students at all grade levels. To achieve this goal, the CMP directs, through its 17 regional sites, collaborative professional development programs founded on the idea that increased teacher understanding of mathematics and effective pedagogies for teaching mathematics are the keys to improving student achievement.

Within CMP programs and activities, public school teachers and community college faculty join ranks with university mathematicians to deepen and broaden their content knowledge, engage in the practice of mathematics, and examine effective approaches to teaching all children. All CMP sites foster the development of teacher leaders who provide ongoing professional development for current and emerging teachers of mathematics in their own schools and districts as well as expertise on issues related to mathematics education on the regional and state levels.

CMP programs maintain a strong focus on access and equity and the need to support teachers' efforts to address the needs of a changing, diverse student population ensuring every child's opportunity to learn and apply mathematical skills, knowledge, and principles.
