Title: TIMSS: Policy, Practice, and K-12 Articulation Implications
Speaker: Joan Ferrini-Mundy and Daniel Goroff, MSEB
Beginning in October, 1996, and continuing for at least a year, releases
of data and reports from the Third International Mathematics and Science
Study (TIMSS) present opportunities both to draw public attention and to
investigate empirically issues before the entire mathematics education
community. We will report on the National Research Council's plans and
future activities related to the TIMSS project with particular attention
to how this informs the agenda of the Mathematical Sciences Education
Board. Finally, we will offer our perspectives on the meaning, utility,
and promise of the TIMSS results for improving mathematics education
policy and practice.
