Title: Calculus with Precalculus: Lessons Learned in Implementation.
Speaker: Doris Schattschneider and Kay Somers, Moravian College; Dennis Ebersole, Northampton Community College
An integrated Calculus with Precalculus course makes calculus accessible to
the student who has weak algebra and problem-solving skills. It provides
conceptual background and reviews specific algebra techniques just prior to
introducing a calculus topic so the techniques can be applied immediately
to solve calculus problems. The presenters developed and inaugurated such
a course 10 years ago at Moravian College, and with funding from FIPSE,
developed a text to use with any Calculus I text in such an integrated
course. With a dissemination grant from FIPSE 1995-97, they have assisted
six widely differing institutions in the process of developing and
instituting their own courses that adapt the integrated model. Extensive
evaluations have been carried out on all the campuses, and the lessons
learned from this implementation will be presented.
