Brief course description: The aim of the course is to go through a rather algebraic approach to the theory of affine and projective varieties, regular and rational functions, morphisms, dimension, divisors and line bundles. This will be continued in the second semester course with a systematic study of schemes, coherent sheaves and cohomology. A main reference is Hartshorne's book "Algebraic Geometry", although we will not follow it very closely. I will provide many other references at the beginning of the course.
Homework and grading: Homework will be posted on this page every Wednesday, and will be due in class the following Wednesday (if you cannot attend class, you can leave it in my mailbox in SEO 304 before class). It is important, and will account essentially for the entire grade. The grader is Luigi Lombardi (SEO 1304). You are encouraged to work on the homework together if you wish, but the write-up should be your own and reflect originality.
Other recommended books: I. R. Shafarevich "Basic Algebraic Geometry"; J. Harris "Algebraic Geometry"; D. Mumford "Red Book of Varieties and Schemes"
