Syllabus updated
Purpose of Course: The purpose of the course is to introduce students to more advanced topics in abstract algebra, specifically the theory of basic types of integral domains, the Sylow Theorems, and Galois Theory. Students will be expected to read the text and comprehend proofs as well as to do problems involving both computations and proofs.
Credit hours: 3 undergraduate, 4 graduate
Prerequisites: Grade of C or better
in Math 320 and grade of C or better in Math 330.
Text: J. Gallian,
Contemporary Abstract Algebra, 6th edition.
Grading:
Hour Exams (2) 40%
Written Homework 20%
Final Exam 40%
Homework: Written Homework (WH) is due on designated Fridays at the beginning of class. No late homework accepted. Several lowest grades will be dropped. WH solutions will be posted on the course homepage.
The Written Homework does not cover all of the important topics of the course and it does not allow for enough practice. It is suggested that you do as many of the designated practice problems as you can. Their solutions can be found in the back of the text book.
Academic Honesty: Students are expected to be thoroughly familiar with the University's policy on academic integrity. See pages 62-63 of the 2007-2009 Undergraduate Catalog
http://www.uic.edu/ucat/04%20U%20Degree%20Req%2061-64.pdf
The University has instituted serious penalties for academic dishonesty.
We encourage you to work with your classmates on homework. Regarding homework, quizzes, hour exams, and the final examination: Copying work to be submitted for grade, or allowing your work to be submitted for grade to be copied, is considered academic dishonesty.
Students with Disabilities: It is University policy that students with disabilities who require accommodations for access and participation in this course must be registered with the Disability Resource Center (same as Office of Disability Services); phone number 312-413-2183 .
Course Topics
A brief review rings; arithmetic properties of Integral Domains; introduction to the theory of fields; constructible numbers; the Sylow Theorems; Galois Theory.
