Mark Ronan is honorary professor of mathematics at University College London (UCL) and emeritus professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC). He has also taught at the University of Braunschweig and the Free University of Berlin, and in the early 1990s was Mason Professor of Mathematics at the University of Birmingham.

In addition to research, and mathematics teaching at all levels from basic undergraduate to advanced graduate courses, Mark has taught university courses on the ancient literature of Mesopotamia — including the Epic of Gilgamesh — using his knowledge of ancient languages written in cuneiform.

His recent book Symmetry and the Monster describes the quest to find all the basic building blocks for symmetry, and his four BBC Radio 3 broadcasts on this subject in April and May 2008 were chosen for Pick of the Week on Radio 4.

Mark also writes essays and book reviews, particularly for Standpoint magazine and the Times Literary Supplement. He has also contributed to the Daily Telegraph and maintains an on-line review site for opera, ballet and theatre performances.
