This course will cover applications of real analysis in the high school mathematics curriculum. Topics include integration, exponentials and logarithms, trigonometric functions, transcendental numbers, Taylor series, Fourier series, and other topics to be decided throughout the semester. Prerequisite(s): MTHT 430 or equivalent. By the last half of the semester, the course will be a student seminar. Each student (and the instructor) will research and present lessons that demonstrate the connections between the MTHT530 coursework and teaching high school mathematics. It is anticipated that each student will have the opportunity for three presentations. |
Required materials: Real Analysis by Frank Morgan, 2005. The book is available through the UIC bookstore. If you look for it elsewhere use either\\ ISBN-10: 0-8218-3670-6 or ISBN-13: 978-0-8218-3670-5. It is published by the American Mathematical Society (AMS). Geogebra, free mathematical software click here to download. This program is a combination of a graphing calculator, a spreadsheet and something similar to geometer's sketchpad. |
Most of the work for MTHT 530 is done on Googledocs. See instructor for more information on how to access those documents. |
