From Peter to Gimley [Note... anyone who has actually
ever seen Gimley, our "virtual classmate," please email us. Peter Shalen and Art
Heyderman really believe in apparitions... and they need clinical help
:-)]
>>... We could,
actually, password protect the roster.
So I have a couple of questions.
Gimley, what is actually involved in
password-protecting a file? Is it
something I could do in the
public_html directory on the math department unix
machine where my web
site lives, without using a lot of space? Or would we
have to do
something fancy and maybe keep the roster somewhere else? And
Gary, is
this solution going to be acceptable to the
LEC?
Cheers,
Peter<<
Gary's response to the above:
Dear Peter,
It would seem to me, without having polled the LEC, that if
the data were password protected that that might satisfy the needs of the class
to prevent the data from reaching the public. We are all aware that this
data is readily available to anyone via those commercial spying
websites. We just don't want to deliver the data to the public on a silver
platter.
I would suggest that you find out from Gimley whether we
can password protect the file and then email me so I can fwd the information to
the LEC. We can then discuss the pros and cons of having it on the web or
having the file emailed to any classmate that requests a periodic update
directly from me.
Thanks for all your
efforts!
Love,
Gary

Art Heyderman's email to Gimley
Farb :
>>Gimley,
Hey Kid, Art Heyderman here. You
probably remember me as A. Jerome Heyderman
from when I wrote for the
Nucleus. As I recall I did an article on
inter-halogens, and you said
that that sort of compound wasn't feasible. Ah,
...but they've made
them.
How have you been doing lately???? Still dabbling in
politics?? I remember
the G.O. election, it was you versus Mohamed
O'Cohen, the fusion candidate
(no pun intended). What a race that was,
went right down to the wire, but
you beat his tail.
I heard
that Mohamed got picked up by the FBI a couple of weeks ago, ...who
would
have thought. Now they're talking about giving him a secret trial in
front of a military tribunal, and with evidence secret evidence that even
his
lawyer won't be allowed to review. Rumor has it that they said he
was a
sleeper agent for the Taliban, and that stole radioactive material
from the
old cyclotron and was going to use it for a radiation scattering
bomb. They
say he planned to contaminate Bronx High School of Science
because he's still
ticked off that he got beaten out in the Westinhouse
Science Fair by one of
their students who did a project on diseases in
sheep.
So much for poor old Mohamed. Sorry for going off on a
tangent (or
co-tangent as the case may be). What's happening with you
these days???
That girl you were dating, Gloria? She was a real
knock-out. As I remember
she was taller than you, by a good two
inches. Statuesque redhead with
piercing green eyes. What a
couple the two of you made at the senior Prom. D
id you ever marry
her?? By the way, who's Fred (in your email address), your
son??? Any other kids??? One of the guys said you worked for the
City now
but he didn't know what you do. I know the problem well, I
work for the Army
and I'm not really too sure just what it is that I
do.
Yeah, I remember the old days in Stuyvesant, the way we used to hang
out in
that little luncheonette next door to the school. I forget it's
name but
they had the greatest burgers and fries, ...the grease was so thich
you could
cut it with a knife. Remember those days, you, me , Jimmy
Dale, Sasha Zill,
and (if my memory still serves me correctly) Art
Hecht.
Remember how we used to screw off in Manny Leibel's english class,
you, me
Walt Heitner, and Barry Paul. There was another bunch of great
guys. ...and
Mr Haas's spanish class, he was something else, used to write
on the
blackboard forward and backward at the same time. He also
taught us a bit of
Latin, "Honi soui qui mal e pans" ... evil to him who
evil thinks, and
"Non-illigitamatum carborundum" ... don't let the bastards
grind you down.
Yes, we had some really special teachers together, Dr
Pascal, (or as we
called her, Pascalita, the 4'1" spanish teacher); Jake
Lieberman (LSMFT --
Lieberman's sheets make flunking tough); Mr Lindner and
Mr Penzer for Bio
Class, and my favorite, Mr Calabrese for mechanical
drawing (remember the
hangman he would draw if your line hung over too
far). We shared some great
teachers.
I also remember how
you almost started a riot in the assembly when Dr
Fliedner got up
there and didn't know trhe names of anyone on the football
team, and that
was right after we took city! What a dunce he was, ...but you
really
shouldn't have started the booing. That just got out of hand.
Well
Gimley, it's been great chatting with you, but please, come on back and
let
me hear more from you. Some of my memories may have been clouded with
time a bit, after all, fourty years is a long time ago. But, onething
still
sticks out crystal clear in my mind, my time in Stuyvesant High School
was
both the beas and the most important years in my life. Thoser
great teachers
taught me the most important lesson of all, to care about
others and to serve
my community. And the greatest collection of
students assembled in America
gave me the encouragement and competition to
make more of my life than I ever
thought possible.
Our strong
band can ne'er be broken...
Your friend and classmate,
Art
Heyderman<<
