Q: All the mail that used to be in my mailbox is gone. Where did it go?

A: Some mail readers, like Eudora and Netscape, collect mail from your mailbox and file it in some other location. If you recently read mail from a new location, go back to that location or mail reader and check if your mail is there.

Q:I need to transfer a file from a Unix machine to my PC on a floppy disk, but the file is too big. What can I do?

A: Use the Unix command split -b 1440000 filename to split the file into floppy sized pieces, where filename is the name of your file. This will give you a bunch of files named xaa, xab, etc. Use the instructions on our web page to copy the pieces onto disks, then copy them onto your PC. Use the DOS command copy to recombine the files: copy /b xaa+xab+xac filename.

Q:When I connect to my home directory on math.uic.edu by ftp from my home Windows machine, I can see my public_html directory but I can't get into it. Why not?

A: One older version of the Network Services Kit doesn't handle symbolic links (like Windows aliases) well -- it can either open links to files or links to folders but not both. (This is set in the preferences.) A new version of the Network Services Kit is available for $15 on CD from the bookstore in CCC.
