Information about Representative Danny Davis (D-IL)

This is an attempt to compile some useful information about Representative Danny Davis.  The sources are

  1. The Library of Congress Thomas website which contains congressional documents such as Rep. Davis' 1 minute speeches and Extensions of Remarks.
  2. Vote smart at www.vote-smart.org (Vote smart has a questionaire with Rep. Davis's answers on a number of issues. A highlighted cached copy with a particular emphasis on foreign policy issue is available here.   Also included is a cached copy of assessments from various groups on how Rep. Davis's voting record corresponded with their recommendations.  A cached copy of Vote Smart's profile is here.  Vote Smart also has information from www.opensecrets.org which gives detailed information about campaign contributions to Rep. Davis's campaigns. A cached copy is available here.  The reader is encouraged to verify and double check this.)
  3. Congress Merge at www.congressmerge.com (this provides information about what subcommittees Rep. Davis serves on).  A cached copy of their information is available here.
(Note: all of these sources should be useful in examining any other member of Congress as well.)

Supports
  1. Defense-slightly increase funding,
  2. International aid-GREATLY increase funding
  3. Terrorism prevention-GREATLY  increase funding
  4. Military hardware-GREATLY  increase funding
  5. Missile Defense Program-maintain current spending
  6. Research and development of new weapons-GREATLY  increase funding
(Note: Rep. Davis's support for greatly increased spending in military hardware is perhaps one of the more unusual and unexpected of his answers to this questionaire since in general he is not in favor of greatly increased spending on defense.  The fact that Boeing has recently relocated to its corporate headquarters to the Chicago area from Seattle may play an important role in Rep. Davis's positions on this matter.)

Legislative Priorities

In a total of seventy-five (75) words or less, please explain what your top two or three priorities will be if elected. Please explain how you would obtain any additional funding needed to implement these priorities.
A special focus of mine is on the problems of re-integrating ex-offenders into the community. With more than two million Americans incarcerated and ever larger numbers of ex-offenders returning to their communities this is an increasingly important problem. Ex-offenders who return to the environment that they inhabited before incarceration, who return without additional education, skills and training, who return with records which make obtaining employment, housing, and other basic needs even more difficult, are more likely to return to anti-social behaviors and more likely to be in conflict with their community. I am working to find the resources and tools to move ex-offenders into a positive, healthy and fully engaged and participating role in their communities, their families and their country.

House Committee and Subcommittee Memberships

Here Richard E. Breyer notes which committees Rep. Davis serves on and how that may reflect his interest in promoting economic development in poorer areas of Chicago.  Also included is the text of an interview Davis conducted with Buzz in which he described when the Black Caucus met with President Bush.
