Course webpage: http://homepages.math.uic.edu/~rosendal/WebpagesMathCourses/MATH241H-2016umd.html

Required text: Calculus; 6th edition, Robert Ellis, Denny Gulick.

Suggested additional text: A guide to MATLAB; 3rd edition, Hunt, Lipsman, Rosenberg.

Course syllabus: We shall cover chapters 11-15 of the calculus book.

Course hours and location:
Monday - Friday, 11:00-11:50 in CHM 0124.
Wednesday, 11:00-12:50 in MTH B0429.

Office hours: Wednesday 3:15-5:00 in my office MTH 2113.

Reading: I will assign chapters from the book that I will try to cover every week. A good strategy is to read every section before it is covered it class, take notes and gain additional understanding during class, and the reread the section and do the assigned homework exercises at the end of the week. The material covered in exercises constitute an integral part of the exam syllabus and will greatly help you assimilate the theoretical material.

Homework: There will be 9 homework sets due over the course of the semester. These should be handed in to me at the beginning of class on the due date (in general Fridays). No late homework will be accepted, so any homework handed in after the deadline will be credited for 0 points. When calculating the homework grade, the two lowest scores will be dropped. So, e.g., if you have missed one homework set, even for justified reasons, then this will be counted as your lowest score.

Midterms: There will be four midterms each taking place on Mondays during regular class hours. The dates are:
  • 1st midterm: Monday September 26th.
    Suggested extra preparation exercises: 12.5.1, 12.5.9, 12.5.13, 12.5.17, 12.5.23, 12.6.1, 12.6.7, 12.6.11, 12.6.15, 12.6.17, 12.6.25.
  • 2nd midterm: Monday October 17th
    Suggested extra preparation exercises: 13.7.7, 13.7.11, 13.7.21, 13.8.1, 13.8.7, 13.8.13, 13.8.25, 13.8.27, 13.9.1, 13.9.3, 13.9.11, 13.9.15.
  • 3rd midterm: Monday November 7th
    Suggested extra preparation exercises: 14.6.1, 14.6.3, 14.6.7, 14.6.9, 14.6.11, 14.7.1, 14.7.5, 14.7.7, 14.7.15, 14.8.1, 14.8.5, 14.8.9, 14.8.13, 14.8.19.
  • 4th midterm: Monday December 5th
    Suggested extra preparation exercises: 15.4.5, 15.4.9, 15.4.17, 15.4.19, 15.5.3, 15.5.11, 15.5.13, 15.6.1, 15.6.3, 15.6.7, 15.6.15, 15.7.1, 15.7.5, 15.7.7, 15.7.15
The midterms and final exam will consist of exercises resembling the homework exercises. So doing exercises equals good exam preparation.

To be excused from a midterm you will need to provide a valid excuse and, in case of illness, a letter from the doctor to this effect. You will not have the chance to make up an exam, so if you are excused from a midterm your midterm grade will be the average of your other midterms. It is entirely your responsibility to be in time for an exam, not your alarm clock's.

Final exam:
  • Wednesday December 14th, 1:30-3:30 in MTH 0201
    Suggested extra preparation exercises: 15.8.9, 15.8.11, 15.8.13, 15.8.15, 15.8.21, 15.8.29

Grade: Your grade will be a weighted average of your homework, midterm, and final scores calculated as follows:
  • Homeworks: 15 %
  • Midterms: 50 %
  • Final: 35 %
