Lecture Notes for Week9 Lecture 1
Notes to be used in place of a furlough day lecture.
Please study these notes in detail. You should be able to repeat the
whole process of graphing f(x) = exp(-x^2) without using the notes. You
must be able to graph a function by following the 10 steps given.
A similar method is used in your textbook. However, the textbook also
includes (a) finding all intervals where f(x) is increasing/decreasing
and (b) finding all intervals where f(x) is concave up/down. For most
functions these steps are redundant and too much unnecessary work. The
same information can be determined from steps 1-10 above. However, in
some cases (a) and (b) may be useful so it expected that you can do (a)
and (b) on an exam if asked to.
